Paris airport strike disrupts travel in Europe; plan for more walkouts

PARIS, July 3: The Paris airport workers' strike has led to large-scale cancellation of flights and disruption in air travel across Europe. The current walkout, which began on Thursday, continued until Sunday. The unions have announced the next phase of strike at the French Capital’s main international hub from July 8 to 10 to press demands for pay hike.

British Airways cancelled 30 flights last week. They were asked to review flight schedules.

France’s civil aviation authority DGAC said it asked airlines to cancel one in five flights at the Paris hub between 7 am and 2 pm local time (GMT +2) on Saturday, a day after one in every six flights was cancelled.

The workers have rejected an offer of 4 per cent pay rise if they agreed to end the strike and notified the management of their new strike plan from the July 8 to 10. Unions are demanding a net €300 increase per month on salaries. Meanwhile, Paris airports’ subcontractor staff also plan a strike from July 13 to 17.

Authorities have warned travellers to expect continued traffic disruptions and advised them to check flight status with airlines and arrive at the airport 3 hours early.

Recently there have been strikes at several European Union airlines. London, Amsterdam, Rome and Frankfurt airports were affected. Workers say more travel disruptions are likely. They demand pay hike as inflation is soaring. While it is 6.5 per cent in European Union, Britain is experiencing a four-decade high of 9.1 per cent.
