Spicejet windshield cracks mid-air, makes 'emergency' landing in Mumbai

MUMBAI, July 5: Just hours after a Dubai flight had to be diverted to Karach midway on Tuesday morning, another Spicejet aircraft had its windshield cracking. The plane was heading for Mumbai from Kandla. It had a safe priority landing in Mumbai.

The incident occurred on flight SG-3324 operated by a turboprop Q400 aircraft. The outer cockpit windshield pane cracked mid-air.

This is the second time during the day the low-cost carrier reported a glitch. Earlier in the morning, a Dubai-bound SpiceJet flight from Delhi was diverted to Karachi in Pakistan as the fuel indicator showed low fuel level. On inspection on ground it was confirmed that there was no fuel leakage, instead it was a malfunctioning of the indicator.

There were 138 passengers who were flown out of Karachi to Dubai in a separate plane sent from India in the evening.

In the Kandla-Mumbai flight, SpiceJet said the outer pane of the windshield on the copilot's side cracked during the cruise on Tuesday. There was no adverse impact on pressurisation in the cabin. The plane was flying at an altitude of 23,000 feet. The aircraft had a safe priority landing in Mumbai. All passengers deboarded safely.

The Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an inquiry.

"During cruise at FL230, P2 side windshield outerpane cracked. Associated non normal checklist actions were carried out. Pressurization was observed to be normal. Priority landing was carried out and aircraft landed safely at BOM (Bombay)," the airline said in a statement.

This was the seventh mishap the airline faced in the last 17 days. The earlier glitches included a bird hit, oil leakage from an engine, a pressurisation problem and a faulty fuel indicator.
