British PM Boris Johnson quits at last! Who next?

'Partygate' scam, inflation, Pincher episode, Paterson's fraud, Sunak and Javid resignations, and of dozens of others, the way he handled the allegations - all dragged a flamboyant Prime Minister to the exit. His one-time adviser Dominic Cummings called the blustering leader an out-of-control shopping trolley! What next? The Conservatives will have long, infallible, democratic procedures, unlike elsewhere, to elect their new leader for No 10. Till then BoJo can continue.

LONDON, July 7: Holding out against all odds for quite long, a flamboyant Boris Johnson has given up at last!. UK's pretentious Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned on Thursday, who was till the other day blustering like a bully but signifying nothing. Apart from the scandals like 'Partygate' and accusations of inefficiency, lack of ideas and direction, the non-serious Prime Minister has been facing serious rebellion from within his own party. (SEE India Travel Times report of June 7: Trust vote won, but Johnson may call snap polls or quit like Theresa)

The 'Partygate' scandal and the charges of mounting living costs and inflation (currently 9.1%) had been fuelling an intra-party rebellion against him for quite some time. He was even fined. Then came the no-confidence motion within his own Conservative party on June 6 which he survived. He was even booed at the Queen's Platinum jubilee celebrations at the St Pauls' Cathedral. Then came the byelection which the party lost, strengthening the campaign to oust him. MP Chris Pincher, who had been accused of sexual misbehaviour, was appointed as deputy chief whip in February, adding to his troubles. The PM had earlier been accused of shielding MP Owen Paterson accused of corruption and lobbying rules violation, and Paterson had to resign.

The final assault came when his Finance Minister and Health Minister, Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resigned on Wednesday accusing him of dishonesty and inefficiency. 'Enough is enough,' said Sajid Javid in his resignation speech. Sunak said, “the public rightly expect the Government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously.” That took the number of resignations so far to over three dozens. The replacement overnight for Sunak - Nadhim Zahawi - also gave up in 24 hours. That was the end of the road for Johnson - and the way he handled allegations!

While Jeremy Hunt accused Johnson of lacking "integrity, competence, and vision", his ex-adviser Dominic Cummings called him an out-of- control shopping trolley.

WHAT NEXT: In the final round of voting for party leadership, all the Conservative party members from across the country will participate by postal vote. Therefore Rishi Sunak's chances hang in the balance. That can boost Jeremy Hunt's prospects. He was Johnson's main opponent last time.

Johnson will continue till the Conservatives elect a new leader. That can take time like in the case of Theresa May or David Cameron.

Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in July 2019, replacing Theresa May under similar circumstances, and defeating Jeremy Hunt who lost the party's leadership vote, and continued as PM after his Conservative party got majority in the general election held in December 2020.

Johnson has never been contrite despite all the scams and allegations. That proved his nemesis.
