Sikkim IRB policeman shoots three colleagues in Delhi, surrenders

NEW DELHI, July 19: Three Sikkim policemen were shot dead by their colleague at the Haiderpur Water Treatment Plant barracks in Rohini in west Delhi where they had been posted, on Monday. After the incident the cop surrendered before the Delhi police. The Sikkim police personnel were posted at the water plant.

The police said the control room at KN Katju Marg police station received a call about the firing incident. “Upon reaching the spot, the team found that three personnel of the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) of Sikkim had been shot at, of whom two had died on the spot while the other one was critically wounded. The injured policeman was immediately rushed to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead on arrival,” they said.

The shooter Lance Naik Prabin Rai (32) of the Sikkim Reserve Police, surrendered at the Samaypur Badli police station at 3 pm. He said during interrogation that he shot his colleagues Pinto Namgyal Bhutia (32), Dhanhang Subba (30) and Indra Lal Chhetri (31) because they had been harassing him.

In a similar case, an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawan shot at and injured his three colleagues on Saturday before shooting himself dead in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district. In another incident, two Army jawans were killed and two others injured in Poonch.

The job of IRBs is to protect a State from terrorist and Maoist attacks. A special armed force of States, it was introduced way back in 1971. So far, 153 battalions have been sanctioned to various States by the Centre.
