First Akasa Air flight flagged off from Mumbai to Ahmedabad

NEW DELHI, Aug 8: The first flight of the new low-cost carrier Akasa Air was inaugurated on Sunday on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. The flight was virtually inaugurated by Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia along with MoS General (Retd) Vijay Kumar Singh. Scindia flagged off the flight from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (T1) in Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

The airline had on July 22 opened ticket sales for 28 weekly flights on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route for travel from August 7 and 28 weekly flights on Bengaluru-Kochi route from August 13, the company had said in a statement.

The commercial operations began with two Boeing 737 Max aircraft. It had received delivery of its first aircraft in Mumbai on July 16. The airline has ordered 72 Boeing 737 Max planes, of them 18 aircraft will start operating this year. It will begin international flights next year.

At the inauguration, the Minister said that India is seeing a democratization of civil aviation agaisnt its earlier perception of being elitist. He said under the UDAN scheme there are 425 routes and 68 new airports and the plan is to have 1,000 routes and 100 airports.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-owned Akasa Air had already received Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the DGCA last month. Akasa will become the eighth domestic airline.

Akasa Air of SNV Aviation Private Limited is an Indian low-cost airline headquartered in Mumbai founded by billionaire Rakesh Jhunjhunwala.

Today budget airline IndiGo currently rules the aviation market, when most airlines are plagued by maintenance issues, mid-air glitches and staff resentments.
