20 killed, 35 wounded in bomb explosion in Kabul mosque

Hundreds of people have died in never-ending bomb attacks by ISIS in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over in August last year. On the other side of the spectrum is a massive humanitarian crisis gripping a 25 million people writhing in excruciating poverty.

KABUL, Aug 18: Over 20 people were killed and 35 wounded in a bomb explosion in a mosque in Kabul during the evening prayers on Wednesday. Those killed included a prominent Imam, it was reported.

The Siddiquiya Mosque which was targeted by a suicide bomber is situated in the city's Kher Khanna locality. Nobody has so far claimed responsibility for the attack on the Sunni mosque. Reuters said the powerful explosion was heard in a northern Kabul neighbourhood, shattering windows in nearby buildings.

The Taliban had taken over control in the country after the US and NATO troops left in August last after a long period of occupation following the 9/11 attacks in the US by Al Qaeda led by Osama bin Laden in 2001. Ever since Taliban takeover, the Afghan ISIS had been mounting terror strikes on Taliban and civilians alike. Several times there have been attacks on mosques killing hundreds of people.

Last week a former Taliban commander, Mehdi Mujahid was killed.

In a year's time of Taliban takeover, there is growing political instability and economic devastation leading to a huge humanitarian crisis. Twenty five million people are writhing in excruciating poverty.
