Delhi, Bengaluru airports roll out facial recognition for seamless boarding

COMMENT: The Digi Yatra facility is currently for domestic passengers at Delhi and Bengaluru airports and it is voluntary. Meanwhile, the Indian fake elite who feed on American pretence of privacy is bound to raise its eyebrows like the cacophony it raised during the introduction of Aadhaar where what is essentially private is still not known!

NEW DELHI, Aug 18: The Delhi and Bengaluru airports have facial recognition system to facilitate a seamless check in of domestic passengers now.

The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) and Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (BIAL) implemented the system as part of the Digi Yatra project of the Civil Aviation Ministry on Tuesday. The biometric boarding system is being used at select checkpoints for the entry of passengers who opt for the new system. Currently the facility is for domestic passengers.

The checkpoints include entry to the airports, security check and boarding gate. A passenger would take less than three seconds at each point.

Passengers at the GMR Hyderabad International Airport will be processed based on the facial recognition system from August 18.

In Delhi, the system has been rolled out at Delhi airport’s T3. Air India, AirAsia, Vistara, IndiGo and SpiceJet operate from the terminal.

At the gate the passenger looks into the Facial Recognition System (FRS) camera and his ID is validated, and then the gate opens for him.

It is voluntary. Those opting for the system will have to download the app and provide Aadhaar and vaccination details and a selfie and register oneself. The beta version of the Digi Yatra app is now available at Playstore for Andriod platform and for IOS it will be available in App Store in a few weeks.

"It's a Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel experience based on Facial Recognition technology. It aims to provide paperless &seamless travel experience to the passengers," DIAL said. Travel documents are not required. Authentication is done by state-of-the-art biometric technology.

However, there are doubts being raised by sections of people about their privacy being compromised by providing "biometrics" (here it is simply the photo! )

A Digi Yatra Foundation has been set up as the nationwide custodian of passenger ID validation process. It is a joint venture (JV) company with equity shareholding of the Airports Authority of India and the private airports.

In the US, the Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) had started ramping up the use of facial recognition in the US by 2018. Biometric facial recognition gives added security. The agency selected facial recognition over others like iris scan and fingerprints. A computer does facial recognition using an algorithm comparing a photo taken at airport or any checkpoint with the traveller’s passport photo or visa. It helps identifying potential impostors.
