Constable among six people killed in shootings in US on Thursday

WASHINGTON, Aug 27: Six people died in shootings in the US on Thursday. Of them, four people were killed in a shooting in an apartment complex in Tucson over eviction on Thursday morning. The four people killed included a policewoman. The other two deaths occurred in Kentucky.

Constable Ms Deborah Martinez-Garibay had gone to Lind Commons Apartments to serve an eviction notice when she was shot dead by the resident who also shot the apartment manager. He then turned the gun on himself. A fourth unidentified person also died.

“I’m heartbroken to learn the news that our Pima County Constable, Deborah Martinez, was killed while doing her job today,” Arizona Rep. Ms Ann Kirkpatrick said in a statement. Martinez-Garibay was an Army veteran and Tucson native.

“When I deal with the people that I have to evict, I understand that’s my responsibility, but they’re still people,” Martinez-Garibay had said. “Just giving some basic dignity and respect can go so far in helping these people rebuild their lives.”

The constable ran an adaptive golf programme for veterans called PGA HOPE which she founded after serving 16 years in the Army. She also worked with homeless veterans, according to New York Post.

The man being evicted from Lind Commons Apartments was one Gavin Lee Stansell.

Meanwhile, a former Arizona police officer was indicted for shooting dead a man in a wheelchair. The incident took place last year. Police officer Ryan Remington was fired from the Tucson police department earlier this year. He had fatally shot Richard Lee Richards, 61, accused of shoplifting from a Walmart store on November 29, 2021. Remington was called to the Walmart by an employee over a suspected shoplifting.

In the second shooting case, two people were killed and several others injured at a Kentucky homeless shelter for men on Thursday. A suspect has been taken into custody. He has been identified as Kenneth B Gibbs of Henderson.

The incident took place at Harbor House, Hendersonville, which is “a safe harbor for men in need.” No motive has been found.
