The proclaimation of Charles as King was made in a conventional and colourful ceremony after an Accession Council meeting at St James’s Palace on Saturday. The Queen's funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey at 11 am Monday (1000 GMT / 3:30 pm Monday IST) on September 19.

LONDON, Sept 10: Prince Charles (73) who ascended to the throne automaticallly and immediately upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II, his mother, on Thursday, was officially proclaimed as King Charles III in a conventional and colourful ceremony after an Accession Council meeting at St James’s Palace on Saturday.

It was also announced that the State funeral for Queen Elizabeth will be held on Monday, September 19.

The Principal Proclamation on Charles' accession to the throne was later read out by the Garter King of Arms, David White, and others from the Proclamation Gallery, a balcony above Friary Court of St James's Palace, accompanied by trumpets. Six former Prime Ministers, other politicians and bishops were present. The new king said, "I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set." The proclamation was televised for the first time.

The council included Privy Counsellors, Charles' son and heir William, wife Camilla and Britain's new Prime Minister Liz Truss. The PM also signs the proclamation of accession.

Charles will also be head of State of 14 other Commonwealth countries.

The oldest and longest-reigning monarch (96), on the throne for 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle, her summer home in Scotland, on Thursday afternoon. She had been ailing for some time and therefore was not scheduled to return to Buckingham Palace soon. The new Prime Minister, Ms Liz Truss, travelled to Balmoral from London for her first audience with the Queen and to receive the appointment as PM.

According to the latest schedule, the coffin will be flown to Buckingham Palace in London from Scotland on Tuesday and from there it will be taken to Westminster Hall where it will lie in state for the masses to pay respects until the funeral at Westminster Abbey at 11 am Monday (1000 GMT / 3:30 pm Monday IST) on September 19.

The Queen's oak coffin has been lying in the ballroom of Balmoral Castle, Scotland, where she died on Thursday. It will be carried to Edinburg, the Scottish Capital, in a six-hour journey on Sunday, where it will remain till Tuesday for the people to pay respects.

The State mourning will continue till the funeral. The formalities of coronation of Charles will take several months. Queen Elizabeth II's coronation took more than a year after ascension.

The Proclamation

“Prince Charles Philip Arthur George is now by the death of our late sovereign of happy memory become our only lawful and rightful liege lord, Charles III by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of his other realms and territories King, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, to whom we do acknowledge all faith and obedience with humble affection, beseeching God by whom kings and queens do reign to bless his majesty with long and happy years to reign over us. God save the King.”

Thereafter Charles made a declaration followed by his taking oath.
