Modi to launch 5G on Oct 1; Reliance Jio starts first on Diwali

NEW DELHI, Sept 25: India will launch 5G, the latest in mobile bandwidth technology, on October 1, the National Broadband Mission has announced. The NBM statement read: “Taking India's digital transformation & connectivity to new heights, Hon'ble PM, @narendramodi, will roll out 5G services in India; at India Mobile Congress; Asia's largest technology exhibition.”

The four-day India Mobile Congress (IMC) is being held at Pragati Maidan from October 1. The National Broadband Mission is a wing under the Ministry of Communications.

The chairmen of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and the new entrant Adani group are likely to be present on the occasion. Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other Ministers will also be participating in the launch.

The largest telecom, media and technology forum in Asia, the IMC aims at evolving technology through dialogues.

Reliance Jio had announced its plans to roll out 5G services in large cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai by Diwali this year and by December 2023 to reach up to talukas. Airtel plans to launch its 5G services in 5,000 cities and towns by March 2024. Vodafone Idea is yet to declare its plans.

Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Government would reach the 5G coverage to the entire country in two years. The Government had allocated spectrum to telecom service providers in mid-August.

The telecom spectrum auction in August had received a record Rs 1.5 lakh cr. Reliance Jio bought nearly half of all the airwaves sold with Rs 87,946.93 cr bid.

Tech Details

  • 5G phones offer higher download speeds, higher network capacity, and lower latency (the time it takes for an IP packet to reach the destination, measured in milliseconds) as compared to 4G phones. It is 200 times lower in 5G
  • 5G is the 5th generation (G stands for generation ) of cellular network technology ie mobile network. It is the latest wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G networks. It has high data speeds, ultra low latency and high network capacity.
  • While the first generation 1G of 1980s delivered analog voice, the second generation 2G of early 1990s introduced digital voice (eg CDMA- Code Division Multiple Access), the third generation 3G of early 2000s brought mobile data (eg CDMA2000) and the fourth generation 4G LTE of 2010s brought mobile broadband (High-speed internet access via mobile networks).
  • A 5G network has super-fast data speed.
  • A 4G sim can be used in a 5G mobile for 4G service. But a 5G sim will not work in a 4G mobile.
  • A 5G phone can download apps, movies and stream HD videos with high speed. There is better video-calling.
  • 5G will provide more connectivity.
  • 5G will expand the mobile system into new realms. It will be applied in industries and agriculture.

QUESTION: Why the mobile slows down after heavy, long usage? This is because heavy usage strains your phone processor, heating it up. Processors are heat sensitive. The hotter the phone gets, the slower they run.

QUESTION: Can 5G replace fibre optic internet connection? The 5G technology needs the support of fibre optic infrastructure as it delivers seamless connectivity, hence its deployment will remain unchanged. 5G and other emerging technologies will be dependent on fibre optic cable network.

QUESTION: Where to learn more? Qualcomm Wireless Academy (QWA) offers a wide array of 5G training.

QUESTION: Which is faster, 5G or wi-fi? 5G offers faster average download speeds than wi-fi.
