MUMBAI, Oct 6: A man from Darbhanga has been arrested for making calls to Mukesh
Ambani and his family threatening their life. The caller had also threatened
to blow up Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai.
The threat calls coincided with Reliance Jio launching a trial beta version
of 5G services for selected Jio users in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Varanasi
on Wednesday. Reliance is offering unlimited 5G data with up to 1Gbps speed.
Ambani had told the India Mobile Congress (IMC) conference in New Delhi last
Saturday, "Today, I want to reiterate Jio's commitment to deliver 5G to every
town, every taluka and every tehsil of our country by December 2023."
The Reliance Chairman had told the company's annual shareholder meeting in
August that Jio would launch 5G in four cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and
Kolkata by Diwali.
Jio had entered the telecom business in September 2016 by offering free voice
calls and cheap data, disrupting the existing telecom companies' customer base.
Accused arrested from Darbhanga
The arrest was made after a joint operation by the Mumbai and Bihar police.
The accused, said to be unemployed, has been identified as one Rakesh Kumar
Mishra. He is being taken back to Mumbai.
On Wednesday, the Reliance Foundation hospital received two calls in a span
of five hours threatening to blow up the hospital. Threat calls were also made
to members of the Ambani family.
"Within a few hours, with the help of Bihar police, one accused has been nabbed
from Darbhanga in Bihar & the team of Mumbai police is returning to Mumbai along
with the accused. Further investigation is underway," DCP Nilotpal was quoted
by ANI as saying.
"At 12.45 pm today and again at 5.04 pm a call was received at a call centre
of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital threatening to blow up the hospital &
threatening to take the lives of Mukesh Ambani, Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and
Anant Ambani," the RIL said in a statement.
"Acting swiftly in the incident of threat calls to Ambani family, a team of
Mumbai Police detained a person from a block in Darbhanga, Bihar at midnight
with help of Bihar Police. Team is on the way back to Mumbai along with the
accused. Further investigation is being done in this matter," the police said
in a statement.
In August this year, a jeweller called up the hospital and threatened to kill
Ambani and his family members. He was arrested. In February last year, an explosives-laden
SUV was found near Ambani's residence 'Antilia'. The case is going on.
On September 29, the Home Ministry upgraded the security cover of Mukesh Ambani
to ‘Z +’ category based on intelligence inputs.
