NEW DELHI, Oct 10: In a shocking incident, six children drowned in a rainwater
pit in a Gurugram (Gurgaon) locality of Delhi National Capital Region on Sunday
afternoon. It has been pouring in the region in the past few days. When the
children went missing, the police and rescue workers were called in who recovered
the bodies.
They were all in the age group of 8 to 14 years and have been identified as
Piyush, Varun, Rahul, Ajit, Deva and Durgesh, residents of Shankar Vihar colony.
Ajit and Durgesh were brothers.
They had gone to play in the ground in the afternoon and seeing the pit full
thought of taking a bath. The pit was dug recently for a rainwater harvesting
scheme in Bajghera village of Sector 111 and left unattended, it was reported.
Some residents said the land belonged to a developer. There were no barricades.
Children's clothes and footwear lying around indicated they had gone down.
Multiple authorities have started trading charges each other. Nobody owned
up the land nor the pit.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced a relief of Rs 2 lakh each to
the families of the deceased! The district administration has announced a magisterial
inquiry to identify such temporary water bodies!!
The bodies have been sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination.
