LONDON, Nov 13: King Charles III was booed and eggs were thrown at him by a
protester at a reception accorded to him and Queen Consort Camilla in the northern
England's city of York to welcome the couple to the city. The protester, 23,
was arrested and later released on bail.
The incident took place while passing through the Micklegate Bar on Wednesday
during a reception on his York visit. It is a custom that the mayor of the city
welcomes the royals to the city through the medieval gateway. Even as the royals
were waving to the people gathered there, the latter also booed at them, "God
Save the King", "Shame on You."
Security guards were standing close by but of no help. The King himself appeared
unaffected and unfazed by the incident.
The protester had tossed four eggs but none hit the couple. They smashed on
the ground.
The offender was handcuffed and taken away in a police van but later granted
bail. He had also hurled vitriol and shouted, 'this country was built on the
blood of slaves.'
Charles had faced such protests earlier also. A couple of months back, he was
booed at the Cardiff Castle by anti-monarchy protestors. They shouted: “We want
a democracy, a Welsh republic”.
The King's coronation is on May 6 next year, at Westminster Abbey, where monarchs
are crowned for nearly a thousand years. Charles had ascended the throne after
his mother Queen Elizabeth's death on September 8 last.
