GANDHINAGAR, Dec 30: Heeraben Modi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother,
was cremated in Gandhingar on Friday morning.
Heeraben passed away in the wee hours of Friday at the UN Mehta Institute of
Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad where she had been undergoing treatment
since last Wednesday for old age-related health problems.
She was 99.
Alongwith other family members, Modi performed her last rites at a crematorium
in Gandhinagar. Modi flew in to Ahmedabad shortly after receiving the news of
her death.
Heeraben was living in Raysan village near Gandhinagar with the Prime Minister's
younger brother Pankaj Modi.
Condolences poured in from all corners of the country and from leaders and
well-wishers.
Modi in his blog titled ‘Mother’ had written on her last birthday: “Today,
I feel extremely happy and fortunate to share that my mother Smt. Heeraba is
entering her hundredth year. This is going to be her birth centenary year. If
my father had been alive, he too would have celebrated his 100th birthday last
week. 2022 is a special year as my mother’s centenary year is starting, and
my father would have completed his ... I have no doubt that everything good
in my life, and all that is good in my character, can be attributed to my parents.
Today, as I sit in Delhi, I am filled with memories from the past.”
Heeraben was born on 18 June 1923 in Vadnagar in Mehsana, Gujarat. She is survived
by five sons - Narendra Modi, Pankaj Modi, Soma Modi, Amrit Modi and Prahlad
Modi - and one daughter, Vasantiben Hasmukhlal Modi.
