Maiden Pharma executives sentenced to jail for exporting spurious drugs
It is widely believed that drug regulation in India is a colluding partner of a
massive underworld business of medicine manufacture portending disastrous
consequences. In the past few months spurious medicines were found in the
stores of a couple of Government hospitals too!
NEW DELHI, March 2: A Sonipat court has jailed two executives of the Maiden
Pharmaceuticals of Haryana for exporting substandard drugs to Vietnam in a decade-old
case. Even as the charges were pending, the pharma was recently involved in
yet another case of supplying spurious cough syrups to Zambia which reportedly
killed 66 children. The WHO had red flagged the pharma and blacklisted its products.
Maiden denied the charges.
The court sentenced Naresh Kumar Goel, director and co-founder of Maiden Pharma,
and MK Sharma, technical director of the company, to two years and six months
of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,00,000 each.
"This court has come to the conclusion that the complainant/prosecution has
duly proved the charge beyond a shadow of reasonable doubt," judge Sanjeev Arya
ruled in his judgement released early this week. The pharma can now appeal to
the High Court.
The Drug Controller had found that the drug Ranitidine exported to Vietnam
was “not of standard quality”. Investigation had started in 2014 when the Indian
mission in Hanoi alerted the Indian Government about Vietnam blacklisting several
Indian pharmaceutical companies.
Cough syrup deaths in Gambia
However, in the latest Gambian case, the Government of India found no harmful
ingredients in the four cough syrups and the pharma also denied its drugs caused
the deaths. The Government had stopped production at the pharma on October last
when the case came to light.
A Gambian parliamentary committee probe concluded that 70 children who consumed
the cough syrups died of kidney injury.
The WHO had said tested samples of the cough syrups had “unacceptable amounts
of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol”.
Uses of Ranitidine
Ranitidine is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines. It works
by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces, which is also sometimes
the cause of persistent cough, stomach pain and heartburn. This drug has been
withdrawn from stores in the US as certain carcinogen was reportedly found in
some products.

Durgapur airport on May 1, yet this is being put out with a view to
familiarising the ordinary fliers with such probabilities lest they are
caught unawares and fail to react rationally to handle such terrible
situations. The 'eternity' can last up to 15 minutes. Tighten your belts,

Rest assured, the aircraft can rock and fall but not more than a hundred
feet anyway.
During the event, nearly 50 other people, including bull tamers and spectators,

Whole localities are sent into quarantine in China using force if someone is
symptomatic of covid. The quarantines are metal boxes set up in far away
camps. The authoritarian regime is resorting to draconian methods to check a
new wave of the epidemic in the country that has already locked down three
cities currently. On the other hand, the US presents a contrasting scenario
where in the name freedom large sections of people refuse vaccination and
assault health workers who mandate the covid restrictions.

Can we ask the vaccinator, "Do you pull back the plunger and
then push the vaccine? Do you Aspirate?" When the vaccination
for covid started there were reports of worrisome incidents of
adverse events post immunisation, the serious complaints being
non-specific blood clots. These related to viral vector vaccines of
human and non-human source: AstraZeneca and Janssen. How
did it happen. There are various views. But here is a suggestion
how simply it can be prevented.
