LOUISVILLE (Kentucky), April 10: Five bank employees were shot dead by a colleague in Louisville in Kentucky on Monday. Eight others were injured, two of them critically. The shooting took place at the Old National Bank in Louisville.

The 25-year old shooter, who livestreamed the attack, died in an encounter with the police who arrived at the scene soon. He was identified as Connor Sturgeon. Two policemen suffered bullet injuries in the shootout.

The shooting took place at 8:38 am (6 pm IST). Some of the employees took refuge in the bank vault. The five killed have been identified as Joshua Barrick, 40; Thomas Elliott, 63; Julianna Farmer, 45; James Tutt, 64; and, Deana Eckert, 57.

It is reported that he was taking revenge as he came to know that he was being terminated.

Sturgeon wrote on his LinkedIn profile that he interned at the bank for three consecutive summers between 2018 and 2020 before joining full time in June 2021. He had graduated from the University of Alabama in December 2020 with a bachelor and master's degree in finance.

Biden reaction to shooting

Reacting to the shooting, President Joe Biden called upon legislators to take action: “Once again, our nation mourns after a senseless act of gun violence — Jill and I pray for the lives lost and impacted by today’s shooting," the President tweeted. "Too many Americans are paying for the price of inaction with their lives. When will Republicans in Congress act to protect our communities?”

In a statement he said, "It’s long past time that we require safe storage of firearms. Require background checks for all gun sales. Eliminate gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability ... We can and must do these things now. A strong majority of Americans want lawmakers to act on commonsense gun safety reforms. Instead, from Florida to North Carolina to the US House of Representatives, we’ve watched Republican officials double down on dangerous bills that make our schools, places of worship, and communities less safe. It’s unconscionable, it’s reckless, and too many Americans are paying with their lives."

The two US Senators from Kentucky - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell andz Rand Paul, both Republicans - reacted to the shooting as devastating on Twitter.

Opposition to gun control

According to the Gun Violence Archive, 4,900 people have died of firearm- related violence so far in 2023. Monday's mass shooting was the 146th of the year. A mass shooting is when four or more people are shot and killed.

The Democrats have been proposing legislation for gun control but the Republicans fiercely defend the constitutional right to bear arms. Any action is stalemated even as mass shootings have become an everyday affair. The arms industry in the US is a powerful lobby.

Recently, Tennessee's Republican-majority House of Representatives expelled two representatives for demonstration in the well of the House on March 30 demanding gun control following the Nashville elementary school shooting which claimed the lives of three children and three staff on March 27.
