BENGALURU, Apr 19: The daughter of a Congress corporator in Hubbali was stabbed to death by a former class-mate in her college on Thursday.

Neha, 23, daughter of Congress Corporator Niranjan Hiremath, was a first-year Masters of Computer Applications (MCA) student at BVB College.

Fayaz, the attacker, also of 23 years age, stabbed her several times and ran away, according to CCTV footage. She was declared dead at the hospital.

It is reported that Fayaz, resident of Belagavi district, had been stalking the girl and that she had rejected his advances.

The accused has been caught by the Vidyanagar police in Hubballi.

Protesters gathered at the college and the police station demanding strictest action.

Renuka Sukumar, Hubballi-Dharwad Commissioner of Police, told India Toda, "At around 4.45-5 pm, the incident happened where an ex-classmate of the girl Neha, studying MCA at BVB College, assaulted her with a knife. He studied BCA there. He stabbed her 6-7 times. What we know so far is that they knew each other as they studied together. Further details along with the motive will be known after interrogation."

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the incident and offered condolences to the family of the deceased.
