BISHKEK (Kyrgyzstan), May 18: The Government has asked Indian students in Kyrgyzstan to stay indoors as mob violence targeting foreign students has escalated. Pakistani and Bangladeshi students have also been facing threat to their life. The victims are mostly MBBS students. Among the injured are Indian and Pakistani students.

Social media posts reported that three Pakistani students were killed in the attack on Friday night but there was no confirmation. However, Pakistan's consulate said in a post on X that some Pakistani students have been injured in the mob attacks.

Pakistan's Embassy in Bishkek said, "A few hostels of medical universities in Bishkek and private residences of international students, including Pakistanis, have been attacked. The hostels are inhabited by students from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh."

Video on social media shows a building which has been vandalised. Some people are seen dragging and beating someone in a building where a few are lying on the floor motionless.

Mob violence started in Capital Bishkek after a video of a fight between groups of Kyrgyz and Egyptian students on May 13 went viral online on Friday. Local people rampaged the hostels of foreign medical students.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday stated in a post on X, “Monitoring the welfare of Indian students in Bishkek. Situation is reportedly calm now. Strongly advise students to stay in regular touch with the Embassy."

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that he has asked the country's envoy there to "provide all necessary help and assistance" to the students. “Deeply concerned over the situation of Pakistani students in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. I have directed Pakistan's Ambassador to provide all necessary help and assistance. My office is also in touch with the Embassy and constantly monitoring the situation," he posted on X.

Meanwhile, Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry has denied any injuries or deaths in the violence. The situation is under control, it said.

The Indian embassy in Kyrgyzstan has issued an emergency helpline for those in distress. The contact number is: 055-571-0041 There are about 14,500 Indian students in Kyrgyzstan.
