WASHINGTON, July 14: Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for the presidential race, was injured and two others, including the suspect, were killed in a shooting at an election rally the ex-President was addressing in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening (Early morning, Sunday, IST). The motive remains unclear as State voter records show that the shooter was a registered Republican.

Injured in the right ear and blood oozing over his face, Trump was whisked off the stage by security men and taken to a medical facility. His campaigners said he is fine. Trump said on social media that a bullet “pierced the upper part” of his right ear. A bloodied Trump ducked under the podium and later threw his fist in the air in a sign of victory.

In the shooting at the rally in Butler which took place at 6:10 pm local time, two others were also critically injured. The shooter, who was shot dead by the secret service, has been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He had opened fire from outside the venue.

The AR-15 rifle the shooter used is a semi-automatic civilian version of the military M-16. The roof from where he shot was 150 metres from the target.

Trump later flew to New Jersey in his private jet after discharge from a local Pennsylvania hospital. He will rest at his golf club in Bedminster there.

President Joe Biden, who was informed of the incident, spoke to Trump, the White House said. “There’s no place in America for this type of violence,” the president said in public remarks. “It’s sick. It’s sick.” He cut short his holiday in Delaware and returned to Washington.

Trump is to be officially nominated at the forthcoming Republican convention, beginning on Monday in Milwaukee.
