WASHINGTON, Aug 6: Vice-President Kamala Harris has picked Minnesota Governor
Tim Walz (60) as her running mate in the presidential election. A military veteran
and of union background, Walz' selection is expected to strengthen the Democratic
prospects in Midwestern States.
She had interviewed Tim Walz, Arizona US Senator Mark Kelly and Pennsylvania
Governor Josh Shapiro over the weekend at her Washington suite. Shapiro was
considered the front-runner for Vice-President.
Probably she wanted to consolidate the working class (as against Vance) and
progressive voters.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and ex-Attorney General
Eric Holder of financial firm Covington are said to have had a say in vetting
the candidates' list. The latter enabling a check on the background and financial
dealings of the short-listed candidates.
Walz was in the Army National Guard for a long time and served in high position
as command sergeant major. A champion of the youth and workers, he is said to have a good focus on middle class economy.
With a childhood background of struggle to survive after his father's premature death, he joined the army to earn for his studies. He became a school teacher and slowly and steadily earned the image of a crusader for middle class rights. He was a Congressman before assuming the Governor's office.
Harris said Walz was "the first governor in the country to enshrine reproductive
freedoms as a fundamental right" after Roe v Wade was overturned by the Supreme
Court.
As Governor he helped pass a law to provide children in public schools in his State with free breakfast and lunch. He got expanded the leave provision to include paid leave for the working class. So also he is credited with a legislation for background checks for gun purchase.
Walz can talk effectively and fast as compared to JD Vance, Republican vice-presidential
nominee.

At the rally, Josh Shapiro who was on top of the short-list of finalists, pledged to “work my tail off” to help Harris and her running mate Tim Walz win the elections.
Ex-President and Prez candidate Donald Trump said Walz would be the worst Vice-President
in history if elected. He will open US borders to criminals, he remarked.
Earlier, on Monday Harris emerged as the only candidate eligible to receive
Democratic votes for nomination. She could officially claim the nomination on
Monday night when the DNC released the results.
"This campaign is not just a fight against Donald Trump. Our campaign is a
fight for the future," she says. After securing the nomination she said, "now
we have some work to do".

PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. Shutting the Education Department is another. On the other hand, running it is also not the Centre's job either (We will convincingly elaborate it in the next chapter).
In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The consequence of all this violation of basic natural law of the universe we cannot predict.
THE AMERICAN CONUNDRUM: Political venom has migrated to top echelons in the US. It was reported last year NASA has become politicised, vitiated. But NASA refuted the charge.
