BANGKOK, Aug 22: Thailand has reported mpox infection. It is Asia’s first case. The patient came from Africa. Arrivals from 42 risk countries will now undergo test.

What has been detected in Thailand is the more contagious and life-threatening strain of mpox. Otherwise, Thailand had an outbreak two years ago. The new strain is called Clade 1b, which can be transmitted through normal contacts.

It was confirmed on Thursday that the 66-year-old patient was infected with the Clade 1b strain of the virus. The patient is a European.

The health department did not identify the country the patient travelled to. He arrived in Thailand on August 14. It only said, he was “likely infected from an endemic country.” It said 43 asymptomatic contacts of the patient are being monitored.

The virus is transmitted by infected animals, especially monkey. Human to human transmission occurs through physical contact or through fomites. Respiratory droplets of infected people also carry the virus. In a few days or within 21 days it causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions as seen in smallpox.

The World Health Organization (WHO) had last week declared a global public health emergency over the virus. It said unlike covid, much is known about mpox on how to control transmission.

An outbreak has been reported from African countries. More than 500 people have died in a month in Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.

Outside of Africa, the first case of the new variant was detected in Sweden last week.

An earlier outbreak of two years ago was caused by a milder version called Claude 2. Thailand also had a large number of cases then. But not the more contagious Clade 1 or Clade 1b variants.
