What caused Air India Boeing 787 crash? Some questions, some answers

The CCTV footage and the video circulating on social media do not indicate any serious abnormalities in takeoff or descent, it has been confirmed. The disaster is becoming curiouser and curiouser. The flight path was not curvy. And the aircraft maintained a steady, gliding descent with its nose straight and the wings perfectly level. The pilot's distress call does not specify what prevented lift and climb-out. Here are some expert opinions. The sole purpose is to raise travellers' awareness about air travel.

NEW DELHI, June 17: The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner met with its first disaster in its 14-year history at Ahmedabad last week, killing all on board except one passenger and 33 others on the ground. Speculation about what caused the crash is swirling. All what we know for certain is the pilot's Mayday distress call, till the time the flight data recorder is examined. Every sign at the runway was normal.

If the pilot was able to tell the ATC at the critical moment, "Thrust not achieved... falling... Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!", he would as well have definitely stated the real cause instead, if he knew. Obviously, he was not aware of what exactly was preventing lift. It would also indicate the cockpit parametres were normal.

Besides, the CCTV and the video circulating on social media do not indicate any serious abnormalities in takeoff or descent.

Unlike what the common man thinks, modern airplanes don't plummet straight down even when both engines fail. The following is the second part of our series on some related questions raised by our readers and the answers given by experts for raising travellers' awareness about how we fly and the emergencies we may encounter.

IndiaTravelTimes: If both the engines fail, the aircraft (Boeing) should fall vertically, not in a gliding angle (as in the video). What do you say about that?

Expert: Not quite! If both engines fail, a Boeing aircraft—like most modern planes—is designed to glide rather than plummet straight down. Aircraft wings generate lift, allowing the plane to descend at a controlled angle rather than dropping vertically. Pilots are trained to manage this situation by maintaining optimal airspeed and angle of descent to maximize the aircraft’s glide range.

For example, a Boeing 747 can glide roughly 15 miles for every mile it descends. That gives pilots a chance to find a safe landing spot, whether it's a runway, a field, or even water. In short, even without engine power, aircraft don’t just drop like a rock—they use aerodynamics to stay controlled. Pretty fascinating, right?

Q: But in the Ethiopian crash the Boeing MAX fell in a vertical descent. How do you explain that?

A: An exception to the usual glide behaviour of aircraft is when other systems too fail like the MCAS in the case of Ethiopia's Boeing 737 MAX 8.

The Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash was a tragic exception to the usual glide behaviour of aircraft. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 involved in the accident experienced a loss of control due to a faulty sensor triggering the Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). This system repeatedly pushed the nose of the aircraft downward, despite the pilots' attempts to counteract it.

As a result, the plane entered a steep, uncontrollable dive shortly after takeoff, leading to its catastrophic impact. The force of the crash was so intense that both engines were found buried deep in the ground. This was not just a typical engine failure scenario but rather a failure of automated flight control systems, which led to a rapid descent instead of a controlled glide.

This crash, along with the earlier Lion Air Flight 610 accident, led to the worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX fleet and extensive investigations into its safety systems. It was a stark reminder of how critical software and sensor reliability are in modern aviation.

Q: In this context, how do you rate the survival chances of passengers of the Air India 787-8 Dreamliner if it had not hit the hostel building? You must have observed the Boeing was gliding and descending normally till it hit the building and then only crashed.

A: Yes. Good question. You are right. The survival chances of passengers aboard the Air India 787-8 Dreamliner would have been significantly higher if the aircraft had not collided with the hostel building.

As you said, reports and a video also indicate that the plane was gliding normally before impact, suggesting that it was still under some level of control.

However, the crash became catastrophic due to several factors:

  1. The collision with the hostel building caused a violent impact, leading to structural failure and a massive fire.
  2. The aircraft was carrying 1.25 lakh litres of fuel, which ignited upon impact, creating temperatures as high as 1,000°C, making survival extremely difficult.
  3. The sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was seated near an emergency exit, which allowed him to escape moments before the fire engulfed the wreckage.
  4. If the aircraft had landed in an open area or even attempt a controlled emergency landing, the chances of survival would have been much much greater.

In previous aviation accidents where planes glided to emergency landings, many passengers survived.

Unfortunately, in this case, the collision with the building and subsequent fire reduced survival chances to Nil except one!

Q: If engine failure was the reason for "Thrust not achieved" Mayday call, both engines were facing problem. Otherwise he could manage with one engine. As you said, Boeing 787 can take off, climb and fly even with one engine. Did bird hit damage both engines? This is a one-in-a-billion chance like the Hudson mishap. Even then there should have been smoke coming from the engine. That is not in the video. There was no burnt bird debris found anywhere either. Your comments.

A: You're absolutely right that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is designed to operate with one engine in case of failure. A dual-engine failure is extremely rare, which is why experts are still debating the exact cause of the crash.

Some aviation analysts suspect that a bird strike may have affected both engines, given the aircraft's sudden loss of thrust shortly after takeoff. However, as you pointed out, there was no visible smoke or burnt bird debris in the footage, which raises questions about whether a bird strike alone could have caused such a catastrophic failure.

Do you suspect something else?

Q. If due to engine or power failure the hydraulic system doesn't work, can the pilot still control the flaps and gears in Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

A: The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner primarily relies on electrically powered systems rather than traditional hydraulic systems for many flight controls, including flaps and landing gear. However, in the event of a complete power failure, pilots may face significant challenges in controlling these components.

Flaps: The 787 uses electrically actuated flaps, meaning they do not depend on hydraulic power. If electrical power is lost, flap movement may be restricted, but backup systems could allow limited control.

Landing Gear: The landing gear is normally extended and retracted using electro-hydraulic actuators. In case of hydraulic failure, there are manual gear extension procedures, but retraction may not be possible.

Landing gear remained extended while flaps were prematurely retracted, possibly due to cascading system failures, which can sometimes lead to abnormal flight configurations.

Q: If flaps are not extended (as in the video), can you still take off/climb? Or, that led to the crash?

A: Flaps are crucial during takeoff because they increase lift, allowing the aircraft to climb efficiently. If flaps are not extended, the aircraft can still take off, but with compromised lift, making climb-out more difficult.

In this case, video footage and eyewitness accounts suggest that the flaps were fully retracted while the landing gear remained extended, which is an unstable configuration for ascent. Aviation experts speculate that this combination could have led to an aerodynamic stall, preventing the aircraft from gaining altitude.

Some theories suggest that the pilots may have accidentally retracted the flaps instead of the landing gear, which would have drastically reduced lift at a critical moment.

Q: What's your take on the latest revelation that RAT is down and extended as per a new video? Read with the retracted flap and extended gear positions.

A: The revelation that the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) was deployed adds a critical layer to the investigation. The RAT is a small emergency turbine that automatically extends when an aircraft experiences complete electrical power loss or severe hydraulic failure. Its presence suggests that the aircraft may have suffered a major systems failure, possibly affecting flight controls.

When combined with the retracted flaps and extended landing gear, this configuration is highly abnormal for takeoff. Flaps are essential for generating lift at lower speeds, and their premature retraction could have compromised climb performance, making it difficult for the aircraft to gain altitude. Meanwhile, extended landing gear increases drag, further reducing the aircraft’s ability to climb efficiently.

Experts analyzing the crash footage speculate that the RAT deployment may indicate a loss of primary electrical power, which could have affected key flight systems, including flap control and landing gear retraction. If the pilots were dealing with cascading failures, they may have been forced into emergency procedures that left the aircraft in an unstable configuration.

It is to be investigated whether the RAT deployment was a symptom of an electrical failure or a result of pilot intervention in response to an emergency. The black box data will determine.

ITT: Thank you. We would like to hear your take on the speculation of aviation fuel contamination or manipulation of the fuel lines as the cause of the Air India disaster in our next conversation.

SELECTIONS FROM OUR ARCHIVES

"It's a big victory not just for Tamil Nadu but for all Indian States. DMK will continue to struggle for and win State autonomy and Federal polity," Chief Minister MK Stalin said.

Of 2.08 km in length, it features 99 spans and a 72.5-metre vertical lift span that rises up to a height of 17 metres, facilitating smooth movement of ships while ensuring seamless train services to the holy town of Rameswaram on Pamban island.

ANALYSIS: There is a lot of hue and cry around the world over Trump's tariffs. But tariff, simply put, is a tax. But unlike tax, it affects the exporting country too. Domestic prices will go up for some time. Nothing more will happen, good or bad!

What motivated Trump's newfound policy, apart from being a stunt to justify his existence in the White House, is a false realisation that increased tariff will make foreign goods prohibitive, thereby boosting local production, and create more jobs, and more prosperity will ring in! If that is true, India would have been shining by now: Producing own Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail and Scotch Whiskies! And what about coconut and palm oil by America! (Today's headlines )

PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. Shutting the Education Department is another. On the other hand, running it is also not the Centre's job either (We will convincingly elaborate it in the next chapter).

In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The consequence of all this violation of basic natural law of the universe we cannot predict.

THE AMERICAN CONUNDRUM: Political venom has migrated to top echelons in the US. It was reported last year NASA has become politicised, vitiated. But NASA refuted the charge. How Boeing developed a glitch but its unmanned return was smooth. When Suni-Wilmore were stranded last June, why the return was set for February? Because that comes only after January 20! SpaceX called the shots, for itself and for Trump. Then the mission was manipulated for March for a better bargain! In between, what made Elon Musk 'predict' during campaign if Kamala Harris wins he would be in jail. In politics, it is said, "the only rule is there are no rules." Difficult times for Americans too.

The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.

Suddenly these colonial clerks feel this effortless, little rule will tremendously enhance security and convenience for the railway passengers manifold. More stations will be covered in the next 77 years! (Also See: New Delhi station stampede... What went wrong?)

ANALYSIS: "The standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraints," says the Government. That means, it is taken for granted the US will set the standard for deportations. For another, the Government is more interested in comparing with what happened in 2012 under a different Government to justify its own compliance! No surprise, others are trampling upon us. (How we conduct ourselves inside decides, inherently, how we are treated outside) Thirdly, the Government blamed the gangs doing the business of human trafficking for the illegal migration. For all the crimes taking place in the country, let us blame the criminals! Funny! We will never move an inch forward! The mindset defines what we are.

Meanwhile, a UN-returned Congress leader Shashi Tharoor sounded like a layman when he said, "If they are citizens of India we have an obligation to take them back." Who said 'No'?. He should know that is not the issue now. Who will identify an undocumented person, and how?

OPINION: A nutty 'new' Trump must know checking illegal immigration is his job and not theirs. And 'penalty' tariff is not a solution. However, Trump talking about "major threat" from "illegal aliens" (illegal immigration) is about what he believes, right or wrong, and to that extent he is genuine and honest; it is certainly not a pretension to prop up his political relevance. Bullies are always true to themselves. Look at India's crooked politicians shouting day in, day out to prove they are more patriotic, and to whip up public sentiments for them to ride on!

The function was held indoors from 12 pm (10:30 pm IST) at the rotunda of the US Capitol building because of unusually intense cold and snow. Delivering his inaugural address, Trump remarked, “The golden age of America begins right now," and just hours later signed a slew of executive orders to redeem the election pledges.

The issue: Trump says he is open to 'economic force' to acquire Canada as its '51st State' if it does not stop the flow of illegal migrants and drugs into the US and secure its border.

Trudeau gets ready for the battle: Trudeau under Trump's onslaught had appeared quiet as a lamb because he was facing serious internal problems and now the situation has changed. He has resigned and has enough space for a single-minded counter-attack as acting PM. And that is what he is doing to Canada's advantage. He will prapare Canada to take the 'bull' by the horns (literally) when he takes office on January 20.

There is more to it: On the same page now, Conservative Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has also outlined his plan to deal with the US President-elect's threats. Both will stand united against the common enemy, and take on him adequately when he assumes office.

And the latest: The counter-attack begins. In a CNN interview, Trudeau strategically addresses the Americans, tells them a ghostly 25% tariff will create a recession in Canada but will be equally devastating for the US economy. And he has a point.

  • A President-elect at the instance of 'sensible' aides has declared, “A smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America.” A Trump statement said he will chop off the bureaucratic flab, or in his own words, “drain the swamp” in Washington. This contrasts with India where millions and millions of clerks rule the roost with the blessings of petty vote bank politicians, who badly needed them, all these 77 years.
  • The South African migrant who will benefit more than Trump himself from the election victory has climbed to the helm - Elon Musk will be the monarch of all he surveys in Washington!
  • Musk will lead a 'Department of Government Efficiency' with Vivek Ramaswamy, the eccentric dreamer.
  • They will slash bureaucracy and Government spending and restructure Federal agencies. (But no mention of what next and how!)
  • The irony lies here: Musk will also be the boss of all Federal agencies, including those currently investigating business frauds in his own companies like Tesla, SpaceX and Starlink, which receive Government funding, inter alia making him the richest man on earth.
>

"We are the only nation not based on race or religion. Literally we are the only nation based on an idea... That all men are created equal."

The former President asked voters to cast their ballot early. (Last elections large-scale early voting had helped Democrats foil any foul play by Trump's alleged foreign agents.)

MAYHEM IN THE AIR: The Civil Aviation Ministry wants to take strict action to prevent more such incidents disrupting Indian aviation!!! Punishment: Culprits of the hoax bomb threats will be put on no-fly list!!! LUDICROUS! Typically this will continue - Both the crime and the punishment. Because our system pushes the scum to the top.

COMMENT: Dragon, unlike what has been reported in the media, is not a rescue mission. Its schedule of liftoff or return has not been changed to suit the stranded astronauts. On the other hand, the astronauts' return has been put off by several months to suit the Dragon's schedule. What SpaceX has done is only dropping two spacemen to accommodate Suni and Wilmore on the capsule's return. And that too was at the instance of NASA which has authority over the choice of astronauts under the contract which facilitates flow of moneys from the American treasury to the pocket of Elon Musk for running his SpaceX business, making him a billionaire and dance with abandon. Result: NASA is a divided house!

Note: The video of the debate (above), a replica of the live telecast, is the best bet to get a real picture of what really was the latest American presidential debate, first hand. Watch.

Kamala Harris had pleaded for unmuting the mic but Trump had his knees knocking. She was a prosecutor and wanted to have a face-to-face with him, an exchange, some pointed questions, unmask him and his money power, expose him before the American people. But that was not to be and we will not call it a debate. Only the moderator will ask questions!

Harris will be seen Tuesday night on the television on the viewers' right side as they sit in front of the set. Viewers tend to focus towards their right side and that in turn can provide a better impact on their voting behaviour. And from the stage's right podium, or the interviewer's stand, she will be in a commanding position vis-a-vis her rival.

HERE's THE PROOF: Attorney General Merrick Garland has accused Russian State broadcaster RT of paying a Tennessee firm $ 10 m to create and distribute content to US audiences with hidden Russian Government messaging. RT chief editor Margarita Simonyan (see pix) is one of 10 people sanctioned by the US for trying to manipulate the elections.

And now Putin declaring an unsolicited support to Harris: A close connection is seen in Trump, in his interview with his chum Musk, making an inappropriate comment calling Harris as most beautiful and comparing her to his wife with a view to blunting her electoral campaign like the fox in the crow story. And Musk later sharing an AI-generated image of Harris as Communist dictator in uniform. The South African has joined the war as his empire is at stake!! All these look like a coordinated Russian traditional job. The Russians managed to give it to Trump in 2016 by damaging Clinton, but failed in 2020!

  • In a fiery speech, an emboldened "girl fallen from the coconut tree" opened her box of agenda and promised the Americans she will take the country to new heights.
  • Kamala exhorted all Americans to forge a new unity that will "chart a new way forward," a first in history, laying the foundations of a new America, and that's her vision. She was greeted with a non-stop standing ovation by the delegates as she took the mike at the jam-packed convention arena.
  • "I will be a President who unites us around our highest aspirations. A President who leads and listens. Who is realistic. Practical," she promised.
