Trump's visa shocker: Microsoft raises alarm, asks staff to rush back

WASHINGTON DC, Sept 20: A panic-stricken Microsoft scrambled on Friday to recall
its H-1B visa-holding employees, who are on travel, to return to the US immediately
in the wake of President Donald Trump’s proclamation raising visa fees to $100,000,
prompting the White House to issue a timely clarification, usually not done
by the administration.
Microsoft's message was sent through its internal emails. Chen, associate general
counsel for US immigration at Microsoft, emailed workers late on Friday to return
by Saturday and avoid future travels to prevent reentry issues.
As the tech giant told them that the new regime kicks in after midnight of
September 21 and they should make it before that, there has been a scramble
for air tickets around the world.
Amazon, Google, Meta, JP Morgan and other major companies too reportedly asked
their employees to hurry up and land in the US positively by Saturday.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified on Saturday afternoon
on X that the new fee and H-1B visa regime only applies to new visa applications
made after Sunday midnight—not current visas or for their renewals. She said
it is a one-time fee but actually the scheme is now for one year only.
“Those who already hold H-1B visas and are currently outside of the country
right now will NOT be charged $100,000 to re-enter,” Leavitt said, adding they
“can leave and re-enter the country to the same extent as they normally would.”
(Currently, the cost includes $215 for “general filing” and $780 for the employer
who sponsor).
Meanwhile, memos released Saturday by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services
and the Customs and Border Protection also clarified the new order.

Microsoft and other tech companies have been using the H-1B visa program to
hire foreign workers to their US offices on a large scale since long.
“The large-scale replacement of American workers through systemic abuse of
the program has undermined both our economic and national security,” the White
House proclamation had said. Trump believes the program discourages Americans
from pursuing STEM careers, which is a national security threat.
The H-1B program was established by Congress during the tenure of President
George HW Bush in 1990. It was created to meet a shortage of skilled workers.
Under the program, companies can sponsor workers in speciality occupations like
scientists, engineers and medical technicians to live and work in the US. Congress
recently capped the H-1B visas at 65,000 for bachelor’s degree holders and 20,000
more for master’s degree holders.
The proclamation is part of the administration’s immigration crackdown that
included a series of merciless raids, border detentions and deportations.

Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. OPINION: A nutty 'new' Trump must know checking illegal immigration is his job and not theirs. And 'penalty' tariff is not a solution. However, Trump talking about "major threat" from "illegal aliens" (illegal immigration) is about what he believes, right or wrong, and to that extent he is genuine and honest; it is certainly not a pretension to prop up his political relevance. Bullies are always true to themselves. Look at India's crooked politicians shouting day in, day out to prove they are more patriotic, and to whip up public sentiments for them to ride on!
