NEW YORK, Sept 18: The BAPS Swaminarayan temple in New York's Melville was
vandalised by suspected Khalistanis on Monday.
The attackers painted anti-India and anti-Hindu graffiti on the walls and signages.
The Indian consulate has taken up the matter with the US Government. The Consulate
said it is "in touch with the community and has raised the matter with US law
enforcement authorities for prompt action against the perpetrators of this heinous
act.”
The Hindu American Foundation has called for a US Justice Department investigation
into the vandalism at the BAPS temple. It said the incident is related to Khalistani
terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun's threats against Hindu institutions.
"Deeply saddened by the desecration of our BAPS Mandir in Melville, NY, an
act aimed at inciting hatred against Hindus. Today, local, state & federal leaders
gathered to promote peace, respect & unity. Guided by our faith, we stand united
against hate with compassion & solidarity," it said.
Similar attacks have occurred in California and Canada. The US State Department
had condemned the vandalism of the Shri Swaminarayan Temple with anti-India
graffiti in California. "Those responsible should be held accountable," it said.
The Swaminarayan Mandir in Canada’s Edmonton was also vandalised, defacing
it with ’anti-India’ graffiti.
