Delhi: Remember the good old adage: Eat to live and not live to
eat. Many digestive system related problems are caused due to unhealthy
eating habits. It is estimated that one in three persons is affected
at some time or the other by abdominal pain and bloating or suffer from
constipation or diarrhoea. This normally occurs as a result of overindulgence
and unhealthy eating habits. Fatty and spicy food, caffeine, smoking,
alcohol and stress contribute to excessive acid being made in the body
that damages the stomach lining. While good diet that provides plenty
of fibre and water is advised to keep the bowels moving smoothly, certain
handy home remedies can be taken for instant relief from these illnesses.
Bael pulp, pomegranate paste and nutmeg are natural cures for diarrhoea.
Pomegranate paste or powder can be taken twice in a day with honey.
Nutmeg's (Jaiphal) 125-250 mg in quantity is effective with lukewarm
water twice or thrice a day. The skin of pomegranate dried in sun has
been found very useful as an additive in food for digestion. Constipation
is another common complaint. Paste of chebulic myrobalan (harada) with
black salt, thrice a day is effective in curing constipation. Three
to five gram Isabgol husk or two grams each of raisin (munakka), chebulic
myrobalan are also recommended with milk at bed time. Indigestion (heaviness,
gas formation, constipation or loose motions) can be treated by using
a mixture of two gram of dried ginger powder with three gram jaggery
twice a day. For abdominal pain or pain around navel Ajowa fruits (ajwain)
powder can be taken with lukewarm water. Keeping stress to a minimum
and doing a little exercise every day will keep the digestive system
