With herbs, it's time to let your hair down

New Delhi: Don't let down your hair! Let the home remedies do the hair care. Among the various entities which reflect personality, hair is a prominent one. Hence, hair related problems are a matter of concern. In comparison to the unpredictable synthetic shampoos flooding the markets, herbs and its formulations have been known to be effective in proper upkeep and treating hair related problems. Indian gooseberry (amla) is an accepted hair tonic in traditional recipes for enriching hair growth and pigmentation. Premature graying of hair has become a common phenomenon. Worries and diet lacking in Vitamin B, iron, copper and iodine are the primary causes of this problem. Other causes being washing hair with hot water, use of electric dryer and use of hair dyes. Heredity is also a predisposing factor. A liberal intake of curry leaves (curry patta) is known to have preventive abilities in graying of hair. Curry leaves nourish the hair roots. Hereafter, new roots that grow are healthier with normal pigment. The leaves can be used in form of chutney or the juice may be squeezed and taken in buttermilk or lassi. Sage (salvia or sefakuss) blended in hair tonics is useful in preventing gray hair. For treating the graying of hair disorder, a finely powdered mixture of two parts of Trailing Eclipta (Bhangra), one part of black sesame seeds and one part of Indian gooseberry (amla) can be prepared. One teaspoonful of this powder can be taken with milk and sugar twice daily. The cut pieces of amla fruit, dried preferably in shade, can be boiled in coconut oil till the solid matter becomes charred. This darkish oil is excellent in preventing graying. Amla used in various health problems, the water in which dried amla pieces are soaked overnight need not be thrown away. This water is nourishing for hair and can be used for the last rinse while washing hair. Henna (mehndi) leaf powder known to have cooling effect is used as a hair conditioner and hair dye. For healthy growth of hair and treating baldness, a filtration of 60 grams of henna leaves boiled in 250 grams of mustard oil in tin basin can be stored for regular head and scalp massage. A combination of Alfalfa, carrot and lettuce juices is rich in elements beneficial for the roots of the hair.

Such a combination taken daily can amazingly help in hair growth. Dandruff is one of the enemies of hair. It weakens the roots, consequent to which hair start falling off. Peel and seeds of ash gourd (petha in Hindi) boiled in coconut oil prevent dandruff and dryness of the scalp. Also, fenugreek (methi) seeds and leaves come handy in removal of dandruff. A fine paste made out of the seeds (two tablespoonfuls) soaked overnight can be applied on the scalp and left on for half an hour before washing thoroughly with soapnut (rita nut) solution or shikakai. A regular application of the paste of fresh fenugreek leaves over the scalp before washing hair also cures you of dandruff. The juice of Indian hemp (bhang) removes dandruff and head lice. Use of milky juice of Euphorbia (Lal dudhi) plant on head is useful in promoting hair growth. The fresh juice of Trailing Eclipta (Bhangra) leaves can also be rubbed into the scalp for this purpose. Shampoos and hair lotions containing pure extract of rosemary rejuvenate the scalp and hair while preventing dandruff and premature baldness.
