Herbal preparations to boost memory

New Delhi: The memory is of utmost importance to an individual. Besides relaxation and meditation, certain herbal preparations can boost one's memory. Powder of the Indian Pennywort (khulakudi or brahmamanduki) leaves taken in small doses with milk is considered beneficial in improving memory. Sage (salvia or sekafuss) has a centuries-old reputation of exerting a beneficial influence on brain, nerves, eyes and glands. It acts on the cortex of the brain thereby eliminating mental exhaustion and improving concentration. Stress can be a cause of mental fatigue. Tea prepared from sage leaves is beneficial in coping with stress. It is advisable to use honey for sweetening the tea. Cumin seeds (jeera) are valuable in curing dullness of memory (amnesia). Three grams of black cumin seeds mixed with 12 grams of pure honey will improve memory. A Zizyphus (ber) preparation is beneficial in treatment of mental retardation. It is prepared by boiling a handful of the dry fruit in half a litre of water till it is reduced to half. Sugar or honey can be added to taste. This should be taken every night before retiring. Zizyphus (ber) helps the functioning of the brain by releasing more glutamic acid into the bloodstream. The acid is believed to be involved in cognitive functions like learning and memory.
