Delhi: With the winter approaching, it is time we changed our daily
habits, including intake of food. Although there is no clear month-wise
demarcation of seasons, according to the Central Council for Research
in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS), Ayurveda has prescribed seasonal regimen
(Ritu Charya), which are pivotal for good health. The months November
and December are "Hemant Ritu" and January to February "Sishir Ritu".
It is recommended that one should eat heavy and nutritious food during
these four months. While, sweet, sour and salty diet has been prescribed
along with milk and its products like ghee and curd; bitter, astringent
and pungent food must be avoided. Intake of lukewarm water and honey
are good for metabolism. Oil massage and steam bath will keep the body
fresh in winter season and physical exercise will keep lethargies at
bay. It is advised not to go on fasting during this season. Before the
onset of winters fried food and curd should not be taken. Instead we
are recommended amla, grapes, rice, wheat and moong and other sweets.
This is the time for purgation (virechan) that is purification of body
through elimination of toxins. "Basant Ritu" or spring season follows
the winter season from March to April. Nasal drop (anu taila) should
be instilled. Use of wheat, barley, asav and arishta has been advised
for this period. During summer season (May to June) sweet, cold and
liquid diet especially water in abundance should be taken to make for
the loss of water from body due to heat and sweat. Soup of pulses, rice,
wheat, boiled water and honey are prescribed for "Varsha Ritu" or rainy
season (July to August). Following these routines builds body's immunity
and checks the adverse impact of seasonal changes on body.
