Pomegranate can reduce ill-effects of alcoholism

New Delhi: Excessive intake of alcohol leads to vomiting, loss of appetite, thirst, diarrhoea, hiccough, dyspnoea, tremors besides perspiration and giddiness. The Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS), has recommended the use of pomegranate juice to reduce ill effects of alcoholism. Fresh juice or sweet syrup of pomegranate (dadima), dates (kharjura), and raisin (draksa) have been recommended. Ayurveda recommends food prepared from barley or wheat along with soup with little quantity of ghee. Sour, oily, spicy and fermented food should be avoided. Milk can be taken for nourishment. Certain activities like massage, bath and yoga will reduce the effects of alcohol. Cleansing measures like Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (purgation) may be given to the ailing person, under the supervision of an Ayurvedic expert.
