Delhi: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss
will inaugurate a two-day 'International Conclave on Traditional Medicine'
today. The Department of AYUSH in collaboration with National Institute
of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR) and Council
of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is organizing the conclave,
which will focus on key issues like standardization, quality control
and development of a regulatory approach for traditional medicine. Issues
relating to market authorization and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
protection of traditional medicine will also be discussed. About 100
delegates from South Asian Association for Regional Co- operation (SAARC),
Asia-Pacific Traditional Medicine and Herbal Technology Network (APTMNET),
Bay of Bengal Initiative for MultiSectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation
(BIMSTEC), India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) Forum member countries,
representatives of World Health Orgainsation (WHO), World Intellectual
Property Organization (WIPO), APCTT and experts on various aspects of
traditional medicine and IPR protection will participate in the conclave.
The gathering will give a boost to traditional medicine by involving
participants from bio-diversity rich countries, which are the cradle
of traditional medicine. The recommendations of the conclave are likely
to be submitted to the Inter Governmental Committee on Intellectual
Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore to
be held at Geneva as well as the International Regulatory Cooperation
in Herbal Medicines (IRCH) set up recently under the support of the
WHO.
