Wheatgrass juice useful in treatment of
chronic diseases

New Delhi: It is said wheatgrass juice can be effective in the treatment of many diseases when all other therapies fail. Wheatgrass juice, containing almost all the minerals and vitamins, is known to have the capacity to fight various diseases including chronic ones. It is found effective in treatment of common cold to bronchitis, anaemia to internal haemorrhage, constipation, diabetes, eczema to burns and inflammation of kidneys. It is even helpful in the treatment of cancer. Wheatgrass, the young shoots of sprouted grains, is a good source of chlorophyll and its juice is often described as "liquid chlorophyll". Magnesium contained in wheatgrass helps in activating about 30 enzymes in the body, Vitamin E is beneficial for heart and Vitamin B17 (laetrile) is known to be only remedy for curing cancer.

Chemically, wheatgrass juice bears a close resemblance to the haemoglobin. A teaspoonful of wheatgrass juice has about 10 to 15 calories and no fat or cholesterol. After 50 years of research on different types of grass, American dietician Dr. Urp Thomas concluded that one-kilogram of wheatgrass can supply nourishment to the human body that can be obtained from 23 kilograms of carefully selected vegetables. He also said that wheatgrass juice is a complete food. Enzymes and gastric juices in wheatgrass are beneficial for the digestive system. They also help in elimination of toxic elements from the body. Wheatgrass therapy is recommended for patients suffering from chronic diseases. Wheatgrass can be chewed or it can be consumed in form of juice. Before starting the therapy, toxic elements need to be eliminated for quicker results. This can be done by total fasting or taking only water or juice diet for a couple of days. Besides, enema can be used to empty the bowels. On completion of the elimination stage, it is advisable to start with raw food.

For chronic ailments it is advantageous to take wheatgrass juice than chewing it. Juice can be easily consumed in comparatively larger quantity. Although, wheatgrass juice can be extracted in electric juicer, pounding grass manually would be a better option to keep the nutrients intact. The juice should be consumed in its pure form soon after it is extracted. Intake of wheatgrass juice should be gradually increased from 25- 50 ml to 250 ml per day. It is possible that chronic patients initially complain of nausea, cold or diarrhoea. In such cases consumption of wheatgrass should be discontinued until the symptoms subside. Juice can be taken on an empty stomach in the morning while eating or drinking anything has to be avoided for the next half an hour. Positive results are visible within three weeks of starting the wheatgrass regimen. The chief exponent of the therapy, Dr Ann Wigmore said that wheatgrass juice can be the last resort when all other therapies fail to cure. Wheatgrass enhances the natural resistance power of the body and is not only a medicine but also a rejuvenating agent.
