Bhopal: A court in Bhopal on Saturday agreed to issue arrest warrant against Samira Jumani, the first wife of gangster Abu Salem in connection with a fake passport case. The case was registered in 2001 against five accused including Abu Salem, Jumani and his second wife Monica Bedi. Salem and Bedi were recently extradited from Portugal to India. Salem is an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts that killed 260 people. Jumani who is allegedly residing in the United States already has a red corner notice issued against her by the Interpol.
The district court postponed the case till next week when Monica Bedi,
second wife of Salem will also be produced in the fake passport forgery
case. "We asked the court to issue an arrest warrant against Samira Jumani
and it has agreed on that," said RK Motwani, a government counsel. Najamuddin,
the lawyer of Siraj, one of the accused in the case said that since three
of the five named in the case were not present till now, the case will
come up for hearing on November 26. "Till now the case came up for hearing
40 times. However, the three accused are missing and they need to be produced
before the court. Since the accused didn't turn up, the trial kept on
getting postponed. The next date of hearing is on 26th of this month,"
said Najamuddin. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has said Jumani
could provide much needed information in the Mumbai blasts case. Police
have also accused Abu Salem of being a key associate of criminal syndicate
leader Dawood Ibrahim, whom they say planned and financed the bombings
in Mumbai. Salem had been held in Portugal since he was arrested with
Bedi in 2002 for using fake documents and resisting arrest. |
