600 kg of deer horns seized in Punjab Hoshiarpur
(Punjab): In one of the biggest seizures ever, Punjab Police have
recovered over 600 kilograms of deer horns. "This is the biggest seizure.
Antelope and Sambar horns have been recovered, which is close to 600 kilograms.
The investigation is still on," said Kulraj Singh, a forest officer (Hoshiarpur).
Wildlife officers estimate that thousands of deer must have been killed
to obtain these horns. The horns are of an extremely rare species of the
Sambar deer, protected under Wildlife Act of 1972. Storing or dealing
in its horns, hides, bone and meat is strictly banned. Trade in wildlife
products is banned in India. But skins and bones of animals, which are
believed to have medicinal values, are in great demand in the international
market, particularly in China and Thailand. |
