Animal carcasses seized in Agra Agra:
Forest officials in Agra have seized a huge consignment of dead animals
meant for foreign destinations. "We have recovered wild animals in large
numbers, which include different varieties of snakes, starfish, sting
fish, scorpions and other creatures," said Dharam Singh, a sub division
forest officer. The animals were seized from a house that was being used
as a storage dump by a local agent of the consignee, who is reported to
be from Chennai. Locals said they did not have the faintest idea about
the business. "We did not know that it was such a big business, but we
knew that he used to do it. The place used to stink a lot earlier and
now also. People have complained and the police also came earlier. An
enquiry was done, but we do not know what happened after that," said Krishan
Kumar, a resident. The seizure comes within a week of the recovery of
97 dead cobra babies and 91 Olive Ridley turtles valued at over 10,000
dollars in the international market. The killing of endangered animals
and the trading of their body parts is banned in India. Under Indian law,
the catching, killing, selling or keeping of wild life is a criminal offence.
