Martial
arts for tackling eve teasers
Hyderabad:
Eve teasing becoming common, women in Hyderabad
are resorting to martial arts to combat the menace.
Students and working women are now flocking to a self-defence
training camp organised by the city-based International
Trust. The short-duration workshops offer the young
women an opportunity to grasp quick self-defence tips
from experts. "We want them to get a kind of self-confidence
through these techniques. These techniques make them
confident first and then make them physically stronger,"
said Jyotirmayee Choudhary, an organiser. Under the
watchful eyes of Andhra Pradesh's first black-belt
holder in karate, the trainees are following a strict
regime, to emerge more confident to tackle any physical
assault. Trainees said their confidence levels have
shot up after attending the training session. "People
tease you on the roads and bus stops. They don't feel
you are fit for that level and try to dominate you
in every nature. They don't consider you physically
or mentally fit. So we want to overcome all such things,"
said Farzana Begum. Sharada, another trainee said:
"I have learnt a lot from this workshop. I feel very
courageous and bold after this programme." Incidents
of eve teasing have become common and women especially
encounter such traumatic experiences while using public
transport. Self-defence workshops go a long way in
helping women emerge confident to combat any form
of attack.
