New supermodel in Bollywood

Mumbai: The fashion gurus find him a mix of Hollywood heart-throbs Marlon Brando, Leonardo de Caprio and even James Dean. British born Upen Patel is now the hottest male super model from India. It has just been over a year now and 23-year old Upen has already grabbed some of the biggest campaigns which normally would have taken years to achieve. Currently he has bagged some big campaigns with names like Wendell Rodricks, Vikram Phadnis (with Salman Khan), Narendra Kumar, Amber & Shirin, Bee and Westside (with Yuvraj Singh). Perhaps the only male model to do over 12 shows a week at this year's India Fashion Week, it comes as no surprise that Upen has already bagged some 22 major ramp shows in the coming two months so much that designer Rana Gill introduced a men's collection for the first time after getting inspiration from him. Upen who was modeling around Europe for nearly two and a half years before coming to India says that it was the lure of Bollywood that brought him to India. "I have done over 25 ramp shows for some of the biggest fashion houses which have included Hugo Boss, Paul Smith, Zenga etc and have appeared in publications such as Vogue, Men's Health and GQ and have also featured in many advertising campaigns one of the biggest being the KENZO jungle which ran for six months around Europe. But, there I was just another model doing Vogue and London Fashion Week. I always wanted to try Bollywood and that's why I decided to come to Mumbai", he said. Last year Upen was attracted towards Indian projects when he was awarded the title of the 'UKs No1 indian male model' by Zee TV(UK) which introduced him to the Indian fashion world. After receiving this award he modeled for every Indian designer and publication such as Selfridges(Bollywood Season), Asian Women & Bride Magazine, Snoop Magazine etc. "Since coming to India, everything has happen so fast for me, I got here and they asked me to do the Lakme Fashion week which was a great success for me," says Upen who was called 'next big thing' live on national TV. Upen who has appeared in 14 music videos one of them being the Punjabi MC video which made it to the mainstream international charts and became a huge club track in India, will now do one international music video to be shot in Paris featuring him along with another leading French model. "The video is for a very big singer called Jean' Michael from France. I got this offer from a director from London who I had worked earlier and this also happens to be his first major international video," avers Upen. Patel is also the hottest contender at the upcoming F Awards organized by Wizcraft which will take place in September. He is nominated as 'Best Male model in a Print Campaign,' 'Best Face of the year,' and 'Best Male on the ramp.'

Models showcase the latest designs from Manipur

Imphal: Sashaying down the ramp in a recent show, models showcased the latest designs from Imphal. In a fusion of both tradtional and western wear, these models showed that Manipur was determined to make the rest of India sit up and take notice. This new found confidence stems from a belief that fashion is a viable career option. As the beauty pageants being organised in most schools and colleges here, to the mushrooming of fashion institutions in the state, illustrate only too well. And with ramp shows becoming a routine affair, fashion seems all set to put Manipur on the world map. A model has this to say: "Prospects of modelling as career in Manipur is there though it is just the begining here. However in view of the coming up of more designers and sponsors,we the models have an opportunity to take part in their shows twice in a month".
