Indian fashion designers showcase traditional
textiles
New Delhi:
New Delhi came alive to the fun and frolic on the ramp
on Saturday with a fashion evening showcasing the best of
traditional handlooms. Top fashion designers including Rina
Dhaka, Rohit Bal, Sunit Varma, J.J.Valaya and Sabyasachi Mukherjee
presented their creations on textiles ranging from khadi,
cotton and silk. Models sashayed down the ramps in colourful
attires, which included the traditional saree drapes. The
show was held on the backdrop of the ongoing Tex-Styles India
2005, in a bid to attract foreign buyers and promote Indian
textiles abroad. Dhaka, known for presenting shocking designs
on the ramp, said Indian designers needed exposure to sustain
in the international markets. "Our influence is very big and
but the designer in India is a businessman, he is his own
marketer, he is his own retailer, he is his own funder, and
he is not good at it. These are very weak links. Till we do
not improve them, it is always going to be insecure grounds
for us," she said. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who recently showcased
his "Frog Princess" creations at the Milan Fashion Show, said:
"I think Indian fashion is slowly and slowly making a lot
of difference in the world fashion scenario. We are making
our entries slowly but surely. I think we are going to get
there very soon," he said. Fashion experts and industry insiders
say it is only a matter of time before some striking originality
and brilliance sees India inc. establishes itself with the
international style icons.
