Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera sizzles on Goa ramp
Panaji (Goa):
Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera, who is in India on
an AIDS awareness campaign, was the showstopper at a fashion
show at the La Calypso beach resort in Goa. The beauty queen
from Puerto Rico participated in a fashion show jointly organised
by Fashion TV and the Goa State Aids Control Society (GSACS).
"That is one of the problems of Asia. I would like to spread
the message that you can get tested. Simple exam that everyone
should do, just as going to the doctor when you have high
blood pressure" Rivera said. Zuleyka walked the ramp along
with 13 other international models, sporting New York-designer
Sanjana Jon's creations. Goans and tourists cheered the beauty
queen during her catwalk. Rivera has been visiting several
red-light areas and working towards creating an awareness
about AIDS, particularly by using fashion as a medium with
catchy slogans such as "Get tested, it's in fashion". She
has aleady completed visits to New Delhi and Mumbai to advocate
the need for protected sex among commercial sex workers. Rivera
will also visit Bangalore as part of her tour. India has the
world's highest HIV/AIDS caseload with 5.7 million infected
people. Although the country reported its first case over
20 years ago, many sufferers still face acute stigma due to
a lack of awareness and misconceptions about the disease.

Men and Bollywood dominate Mumbai Fashion
Week
Mumbai: The
Mumbai Fashion Week, which began on Tuesday, was dominated
by Bollywood and men, as male film stars ruled the ramp here.
Narendra Kumar, who presented the men's collection for fashion
conscious metrosexuals roped in Bollywood star John Abraham
to do the ramp show wearing a floral motif shirts and trousers
in his collection named "The Artist Inside". Pooja Bedi, a
former Bollywood actor and now a TV presenter was bowled over
by the collection and said, "I think it's wonderful, because
it shows that the Indian male is focused on grooming, on presenting
himself well and buying wonderful clothes." With the fashion
week beginning with men's collection for the first time which
is usually dominated by female fashion, Bedi said that the
change is attributed to the new image of Indian man who is
conscious of what he wears. "Fashion week has begun with the
men's collection I think that's a huge statement in itself,"
she added. Though no big names of fashion industry featured
on day one, the second day will feature Wendell Rodricks,
which is expected to create a flutter. Designers showcasing
their collections on the first day were Vineet Bahl, Debarghya
Bairagi, Navonil Das, Anupam Dayal, Vikram Phadnis and Priyadarshani
Rao. Surily Goel, known for her proximity with Bollywood had
a host of stars attending her show. But the day second day
belonged to Clive Rundle who presented the perfect mix of
African style wrapped in Indian colours. With African music
in the background, models sashayed the ramp with African styled
skirts in colours as bright as yellow, green, orange and red.
The dark African shades of deep brown and burgundy made the
base with bright Indian colours contemplating it. On day one,
however, white dominated the ramp. Designer Vineet Behl claimed
white has all the colours and is the best for clothes, despite
being colourless! "Whenever I start with the collection I
always think to start with white because white is the best
thing to start any collection. White has no colour and yet
it has all the colours in it. And from there we go on to other
colours. Right now it's all bright I am thinking, no dull
pastures. Just bright, bright... You know I will go just mad
with colours," said Behl. Priydarshani Rao brought back the
traditional salwar-kameez signalling the return of romance
with monochromatic greens, browns and pinks.
