Fashion designer Rebello rubbishes Sherawat dress
controversy
Mumbai: Ashley
Rebello, who designed the controversial diamond dress that
was worn by Bollywood item girl Mallika Sherawat at a recent
hotel performance in Mumbai, has rejected suggestions that
the costume was vulgar. Mallika wore a single piece skin coloured
jump suit with a bikini top that was studded with diamonds
and a silver diamond belt during her hour-long 'Jewel 07'
programme held at hotel J W Marriot Hotel on New Year's eve.
"Actually, I don't understand what to say. If Mallika doesn't
wear clothes, people say something and if she wears some thing,
they say something. She was covered from the neck to toe.
She was wearing a skin colour full body suit, which has got
two layers of fabric. No one could see any of her undergarments
from inside through the body suit. I did not see it vulgar
at all," said Ashley. Ashley, who was sharing some make-up
tips with students of Air Hostess Academy, alleged that the
hullabaloo was caused by people having vested interests inimical
to Sherawat and himself. "They want publicity out of it and
are going to forget. They are going to put the court case,
which costs them rupees 3 lakh. Nobody is willing to put in
such kind of money. So, she (Mallika) said why are we bothering
about these people. They want to see Mallika and they want
me to be there and that's why they are dong such things,"
alleged Ashley. A social worker, Vinod Jain, had lodged a
complaint before the Mumbai Police seeking action against
Mallika for wearing 'obscene clothes' during her performance
Later, the Baroda Bar Association (BBA) President Narendra
Tiwari had also filed a complaint in the court of the Chief
Judicial Magistrate seeking action against Mallika and the
owner of the hotel for holding an 'ugly' and a 'dirty' public
programme.

Bangalore to host South India Jewellery
Show
Bangalore:
Bangalore will host an exhibition on jewellery, gems and
allied products-- the South India Jewellery Show-2007 (SIJS
2007)-- from February 16-18. Considering the growing need
to provide retail trade with products with varying price points
and designs, and dearth of supply chain and logistics, 'The
Art of Jewellery' magazine, in association with World Gold
Council (WGC) and Gitanjali Group will be organising the show
in support with the All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation.
This expo will be a high-end jewellery event with emphasis
on latest designs, trends and technology. The SIJS 2007 aims
to provide a platform to facilitate closer interaction between
the retailers and the manufacturers. It will provide for a
two-way traffic for business expansion. "This Business-to-Business
Exhibition is an attempt to address that long felt need in
Karnataka, to bring the retail trade closer to various manufacturers
of jewellery. This show promises to be the ideal forum for
the jewellery fraternity to enhance their business and knowledge
base as well," said K. Shivram, Vice President, World Gold
Council. The show will offer an opportunity for the retailers
to directly source from the manufacturers, thereby eliminating
intermediaries. This event also allows for close interaction
between manufacturing, wholesale and retail segments, thereby
increasing profitability. In addition, it will provide a chance
to make new business connections, tie-ups, and trade partnerships.
Manufacturers from Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi, Junagadh, Meerut,
Kolkata, Thrissur, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai
will be showcasing a wide spectrum of jewellery under one
roof at SIJS.

NIFT's extension centre to be set up at
Rae Bareli
New Delhi:
National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) will now
have its extension in Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh after the
Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today gave its approval
for its setting up there. The extension centre is expected
to become operational from the academic session 2007-08. The
operational cost in the three initial of the centre will cost
Rs.10.75 crore, excluding the cost of land, construction and
major repairs. The approved extension centre is expected to
ease pressure on the existing centre at Delhi, and minimize
the regional mismatch between the number of seats available
and the number of applicants based on present locations of
NIFT centres. NIFT was set up by the Ministry of Textiles
in the year 1986 as an autonomous society fully funded and
supported by the Government of India as a national level institute
for design, management, and technology. Its aims to prepare
and train professionals to meet the challenges of the dynamic
global market in promoting India's exports in textiles, garments,
lifestyle products and other fashion goods. NIFT has been
running full time diploma programmes through its seven centres
located at New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad,
Gandhinagar and Bangalore.
