Khanna showcases bridal wear at Lakme Fashion Week
Mumbai: Fashion designer Anamika Khanna showcased
bridal-wear at the grand finale of Lakme Fashion Week here last evening. Models
sashayed the ramp in Indian traditional drape sarees and lehnga's for Khanna's
collection. The designer weaved together Indian heritage with the modern eclectic
touch. Khanna received applause from the audience for the dark colours and contemporized
traditional textures of the ensembles. "We have used a lot of Indian elements
and have worked on many Indian textiles and handicrafts. Especially, a regional
fabric of Kerala 'Mundu', which is used by mostly all the Keralites. We have tried
to conceptualize it. We have developed all texture using traditional garments
and with all the Indian elements we have used some contemporary elements as well,"
said Khanna. Meanwhile, Bollywood model-turned actor Mugdha Godse walked the ramp
for designer Narendra Kumar, whose collection was inspired by the young women
caught under moral policing by some rightwing Hindu outfits. Godse walked the
ramp in flamboyant multi-coloured off-shoulder gown and said that she wanted to
completely support the cause of moral policing. "By just doing moral policing
you can't stop us and put us behind the doors saying that you can't do this you
can't do that. We live in a democratic country, so we exactly can decide what
we want to do. I support this completely," said Godse. Edward Hopper, an American
artist known for his lush usage of colour and realistic portrayal of America,
inspired Kumar's colour palette. Kumar's collection was based on modern cuts and
silhouettes and the ensembles included the luxurious aspects of specially woven
Indian fabrics. -April
