Obama disappoints top US designers with London outfits London:
Michelle Obama may have wowed the Brits with her chic outfits during her London
visit but top US fashion designers worry her designs "don't carry the right message".
According to Oscar de la Renta, a firm favourite amongst previous First Ladies,
the mum-of-two's choice of switching between young and foreign designers could
do a little rethinking. "American fashion right now is struggling," the Telegraph
quoted him as telling Women's Wear Daily (WWD), the "fashion industry bible".
"I think I understand what [Obama and her advisers] are doing, but I don't think
that is the right message at this particular point. "I don't object to the fact
that Mrs Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America
is what makes this country great. "But there are a lot of great designers out
there. I think it's wrong to go in one direction only," he added. Criticizing
on her choice of attire during her historic meeting with Queen Elizabeth, he added:
"You don't...go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater." Meanwhile Vera Wang, another
top name waiting to be added to the present First Lady's list of designers, also
said: "I love seeing young designers and their vision and how they grow. "On the
other hand, I wish she would consider some of us, because I think we also have
contributions to make." Bridgey Foley, executive editor of WWD, added: "Like the
auto and financial industries, fashion is in crisis. Yet the person in the administration
best positioned to support its major players...is giving them the cold shoulder.
"And we don't mean Donna Karan's. No one's asking for a big-gun bailout, Mrs O
(at least not yet). But how about a shout-out?". -April
