by Jigmet
Leh:
A fortnight long Ladakh festival, an annual cultural
extravaganza commenced in the Ladakh region of Jammu
and Kashmir amidst much fanfare and gaiety. The inaugural
ceremony witnessed a cultural extravaganza in the
form of a procession taken out through the roads of
Leh presenting the rich heritage of Ladakh. The participants,
bedecked in beautiful ethnic dresses with glittering
hues, presented virtual tableaux of the traditions
of the hilly expanse. A big procession by various
cultural troupes from all corners of Ladakh was taken
out from Chhubi Leh which after passing through the
Leh market culminated at Leh Polo- ground where the
main function was held. In his inaugural speech, Jammu
and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra underlined the need
for more development projects for the region. "We
have also discussed that the cost of carrying out
development works in the Leh district is much higher
than in the plains. We have decided that the Leh Development
Council will get an additional budget of ten crores
or 100 million," said Vohra. The opening ceremony
presented a visual exhibition of it's predominantly
Buddhist culture, for the tourists coming from all
part of the country and abroad. Majority of the population
