President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice-President Mohd. Hamid Ansari, Defence Minister AK Antony, Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju and other dignitaries paying homage at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Martyr’s Day at Rajghat in Delhi on January 30

New Delhi: India paid homage to the 'Father of the Nation', Mahatma Gandhi, on his 61st death anniversary, which is also observed as Martyr's Day. The main ceremony took place at Rajghat, Gandhiji's memorial. President Pratibha Devisingh Patil later inaugurated a 'Leprosy Seal Campaign' and an 'Anti-Leprosy Fortnight'. Several other welfare programmes were also launched in rememberance of Gandhiji. Meanwhile, events have been organised in Gujarat, Gandhiji's birthplace. Prayers were offered at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, from where Bapu started his Dandi March in 1930. The Mahatma, a practitioner of non-violence and truth, was instrumental in ending British colonial rule in India. He was born on October 2, 1869 and was assassinated on January 30, 1948.
