wife hosts reception for 'smiling' Pinki

Delhi: After winning accolades at the Oscars, the
little protagonist of Oscar winning documentary 'Smile
Pinki' got a warm reception from the wife of Indian Prime
Minister, Gursharan Kaur. The reception was hosted for
Pinki Sonkar and her father at the PM's official residence
on Friday to honour her Oscar win. Perched safely in her
father's arms, Pinki ducked shy as the photographers urged
her to smile for them. Pinki Sonkar of 'Smile Pinky' returns
to India.
Earlier,
Pinki, who played the lead role in the documentary 'Smile
Pinki', was given a rousing reception at the airport on
Thursday. On her part, Pinki shyly answered just two questions
posed by the media persons. When asked what have you got?,
she replied 'Oscar' and from where have you brought this
award? she said 'America'. Dr Subodh Singh, the surgeon
who gave Pinki the smile that ushered her onto the Hollywood's
red carpet, said that such a film would spread awareness
about cleft lip in society. "Winning of this Oscar is
a big achievement for children suffering with a cleft
lip problem. With this, the awareness will spread in the
world. 'Smile Train' can help children suffering from
this problem in world, specially in India ," said Dr Subodh.
'Smile
Pinki' is the story of a child with a lip deformity. It
was one of the four films nominated for best short documentary
at the famed Oscar Academy Awards. Megan Mylan's film
'Smile Pinki' depicts the saga of six-year-old Pinki Sonkar
who had become a social outcast because of a cleft lip.
The 39-minute documentary traces Pinki's journey from
being ostracized to being treated like a normal girl after
a social worker helped her undergo surgery.
Pinki
has a dream to become a medical practitioner. "After the
operation, she (Pinki) becomes a normal girl, her fate
has changed. Now she wants to be a doctor and wants to
perform lip-cleft surgery on other patients suffering
from cleft lip problem," Pinki's father Rajender Sonkar
said, while talking to the media. Megan Mylan's short
film Smile Pinki, which won the Oscar for the Best Documentary
Short Subject, is tale of a six-year-old girl who becomes
a social outcast because of a cleft lip. The 39-minute
documentary traces Pinki's journey from being ostracized
to being surgically treated in a bid to lead a normal
life.
