Manali - A backpackers' favourite hill resort in the Himalayas

Manali, situated at an altitude of 1830 mts, is 40 km from Kullu, in the north-end of Kullu valley. Manali township is constructed against a backdrop of lush deodar forests, and it well satiates the appetite of a pleasure-seeking traveller. The whole area and its surroundings are well-known for their natural beauty - snow-clad mountain peaks, dark green forests and enchanting hill stations. Legend has it that at the end of the deluge or Pralaya, the great Manu first stepped off his celestial boat at Manali (Hence Manu-alaya or home of Manu) and it is here that the human race once again re-established its life. The town offers unrivalled opportunities for trekking, rock climbing, angling and winter sports. It is an excellent place, not just for a picnic, but also for a short holiday. Trekkers find Manali a preferred starting point.

Places around Manali: There is a temple dedicated to Vashisht muni (king Dasratha's family guru and advisor) with a hot spring on the side of it, a temple in memory of Hirdimba, consort of Bhima of Mahabharata, a Tibetan monastery, Rahla falls and Rohtang pass which are worth a visit.
