At Rohtang Pass, mountains rise above the clouds

Rohtang Pass is the highest point (4112 mts) on the Manali-Keylong road, 50 km from Manali town, and connecting Kullu with Lahaul and Spiti Valleys.

On the eastern side of the Pir Pranjal Range in the Himalayas, Rohtang Pass is 50 km north of Manali town, on Manali-Keylong road, connecting Kullu Valley with Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh. Rohtang Pass offers spectacular sights of mountain peaks rising above the clouds.

Rohtang pass deserves a special mention. It provides a wide panoramic view of the mountains, sights truly breath-taking. It offers only limited skiing opportunities, but trekking possibilities are immense. The pass is open from June to September although trekkers can cross the pass from May.

(A new tunnel has been built recently, reducing the time taken to cross and also eliminating the risks the pass posed. The tunnel is all-weather and is open round-the-year since the year 2020. It has been renamed Atal tunnel after former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.)

Beyond Rohtang pass lies the remote and, perhaps, the stark and haunting landscape of predominantly Buddhist areas. The comparative inaccessibility of the place has helped preserve the pristine culture of the people of the region.
