Turkish
baths discovered in Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur
Sikri: Two Turkish baths, also known as Hamam,
dating back to the Mughal era, have been unearthed
at a famous mausoleum in the ancient city of Fatehpur
Sikri. The excavations were made during restoration
of the monument being carried out by the Archaeological
Survey of India (ASI). The twin discoveries of Jere
Hamam and Hakim Hamam are reminiscent of the lifestyle
led by the Mughals. These principal bath chambers
have facilities like separate water channels for warm
and cold water, a bathing tub, and also a fountain.
"We have found a drainage system in the east phase
of Jere Hamam as well as water channels." said Mumzar
Ali, Assistant Conservator, ASI. "We have completely
conserved the Hakim Hamam and restored its channels
of hot and cold water as well as the fountains therein,"
he added. Once considered to be a symbol of Mughal
grandeur, the monument lies in ruins today. A mosque
situated in the premises of the mausoleum of the famous
saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, is in a dilapidated state
with its ceiling panels breaking away and falling
apart at many places. The bathing chambers have been
unearthed after the recent excavations at two new
gateways to a fort in the neighbouring Agra city.
Archaeologists are excited there could be many more
architectural wonders hidden underground.
