Congress
notice to UN on Volcker report
New
Delhi: The Congress Party has decided to send a comprehensive
legal notice to the UN and the Volcker Committee and demanded
a full disclosure of the materials on the basis of which the
Committee has said that the party was a beneficiary in the
UN "Oil for Food" contracts. The party said that it was shocked
to find that it has been referred to as a "non-contractual
beneficiary" in the Volcker report. It said that the Congress
unequivocally and categorically denied any knowledge of or
connection with any "oil for food" contracts and had no dealings
with the Government of Iraq or any of its agencies or with
any other company or individual. It said that in the event
of the world body and the Committee failing to disclose any
relevant materials to substantiate the claims, the Congress
would demand an "unconditional apology for wrongly and maliciously
making a reference to it".
