Salem
has threat to life from rivals: CBI chief
Mumbai:
CBI director US Mishra has said that the agency had specific
intelligence inputs concerning threats to extradited gangster
Abu Salem from rivals. Mishra, who was on a brief visit to the
city, reviewed progress of interrogation of Salem by the CBI
special task force, adding that adequate security measures have
been taken to thwart any threat to the suspect's life. Commenting
on the controversy over the statements of Salem's lawyers that
the gangster could turn approver, Mishra said that the stage
had not come yet for this issue. "He has to become an accused
first," he said. On being asked about the progress in the extradition
request made to the US for Salem's separated wife, Samira Jumani,
he said that the process was on. He however, refused to give
elaborate details regarding the same.
Bhopal:
A local court here issued a permanent warrant against underworld
don Abu Salem's first wife Sameera Jumani on Saturday in
connection to a fake passport case, police sources said today.
According to the report, the warrant was issued as a renewal
of an earlier warrant following an application for renewal.
A chargesheet was produced before the court against Salem, Sameera,
Monica and others in 2002, following which permanent arrest
warrants were issued against the accused, Superintendent of
Police A K Singh said. Sameera, who is believed to be hiding
in the USA, was booked in 1997 for procuring a forged passport
from Lucknow in the name of Sabina Azmi in July 1993 along with
Salem who also procured a forged passport from the same city
in the name of Akil Ahmed Azmi. The Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) holds that Samira would be knowing more information than
Monica Bedi about Salem and his involvement in blasts, his extortion
business and other interests in property.
