Indian
engineer abducted in Afghanistan
New
Delhi: An Indian engineer along with three Afghan citizens
was abducted on Saturday night in Afghanistan's southern Nimroz
province. Provincial Governor Ghulam Dasthaqir said that the
Indian road engineer, MS Kutty, was abducted while on his way
from Gur Gure to Minar. He was accompanied by one Afghan engineer,
and two policemen for security. Dasthaqir, however, said they
had no idea of the kidnappers as yet, adding that investigations
were underway. "We've had no contact with the kidnappers but
we're investigating," he said. The Taliban, which is suspected
to have carried out the abduction have previously abducted several
Turkish and Indian engineers involved in road works in southern
Afghanistan in the past years. Earlier, in 2003, the Taliban
abducted two Indians working for a private road construction
company. They were later released. The Government of India is
constructing the highway between Zeranj to Delaram in the province
as part of its financial assistance programme. Kutty is working
with the Army's premier road building agency, the Border Roads
Organisation, which has been entrusted with the onerous task
of building the 219 kilometre long, 380 crore rupees Delaram-Zaranj
road project in Afghanistan. The road, would garland the Kabul-Kandahar
road, which goes from Herat to the Iran border and upon completion
will give access to the two ports Chabahar and Bandarabbas.
